About this Species

The Short-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas nigrirostris) is a bird species that inhabits the Yucatan Peninsula, a region located in southeastern Mexico and parts of Central America. These pigeons are generally found in humid, lowland forests and feed on a variety of fruits and seeds.

During the breeding season, which typically takes place from March to July, Short-billed Pigeons build nests in trees and lay one or two eggs. The chicks are fed regurgitated food by both parents and fledge within 15 to 20 days after hatching. While not considered endangered, the Short-billed Pigeon is vulnerable to habitat loss due to deforestation and other forms of human development.
