About this Species

The Blue Ground Dove (Claravis pretiosa) is a small dove species found in the Yucatan Peninsula, including Guatemala and Belize. These birds typically inhabit dry and semi-dry areas, such as savannas, scrublands, and forests. They feed on a variety of seeds, fruits, and insects.

During breeding season, which typically occurs from March to September, males will perform courtship displays to attract females. After mating, the female will lay 1-2 eggs in a simple nest made of twigs and leaves. Both parents will take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the young.

While the Blue Ground Dove is not currently considered endangered, habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture may pose a threat to their population in the future. Conservation efforts such as habitat restoration and protection can help ensure the continued survival of this species in the Yucatan Peninsula.
