About this Species

The Scaled Pigeon (Patagioenas speciosa) can be found in the Yucatan Peninsula, as well as in parts of Central America and northern South America. This bird is known for its distinctive scaling on its neck and upper breast, which is composed of small, diamond-shaped feathers.

In the Yucatan Peninsula, the Scaled Pigeon is typically found in semi-deciduous and evergreen forests, where it feeds on fruit, seeds, and small insects. During breeding season, the male will perform a distinctive display flight, where it will fly upward and then rapidly descend with its wings and tail feathers spread, producing a loud clapping sound as it retracts its wings. The female will then select a male based on the quality of his display.

Despite being a relatively common species, the Scaled Pigeon faces threats from habitat destruction and hunting in some parts of its range. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species and its habitat, including the establishment of protected areas and sustainable forestry practices.
